I skipped school today to observe a real court hearing. I got to see 10 different cases; 9 dependency and 1 delinquency. It was so fascinating!! but made me realize (again) that I definitely do not want to be a county social worker…or attorney or a judge for that matter. Way too much pressure.
Observing the court today was the last step in my CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) training. I am now ready to find a child through the database of children that don’t yet have a CASA. I’m very excited!! This whole training thing (it’s been going on a few months) has been so fun. Really, I loved going twice a week to learn all about San Mateo’s foster care/dependency system and meeting social workers, attorneys, therapists, and former foster youth. I had never even heard of the CASA program before starting all of this and had no idea what a huge positive impact an advocate can have on a child’s life. Can’t wait to see how it works out! yay.
Becoming a CASA is a big commitment but is said to be “very rewarding” and also very educational if you’re at all interested in the foster care system or law when it pertains to foster youth. If for some reason any of the few people reading this are at all interested in volunteering contact me or click HERE. The people that run the San Mateo CASA program are seriously awesome.
p.s. I’m guessing that the only reason I actually sat down and wrote this whole thing is because I should be writing a 6 page paper for school but love to find anything else I could possibly do instead of that.
