It’s not April anymore but that doesn’t mean this goes away!

April was National Child Abuse Prevention Month and because of that I changed my Facebook picture to this lovely blue ribbon. Changing my Facebook picture probably doesn’t directly prevent a child from being abused (who knows, it could though) but it does bring attention, and shows support, to a cause I feel very strongly about.

If there is a group of humans that deserve more rights than anyone else, it’s children…though having equal rights would be a good first step! Children should have the right to protect their own body and mind. They should have the right to say NO, and have it heard by their parents and government, when they feel uncomfortable or violated (…like when they are being kicked, punched, or touched in a way they feel is wrong). If I were to call the police and tell them my boyfriend (or my parent) had just beat me up, I’d be able to press charges. Children do not have this same right and that’s NOT FAIR.

Giving children the legal protection they deserve would not cure the problem immediately but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t start the process now. If children were given these rights, I believe adults would begin to respect them as they should! Over time children would be viewed as equal citizens by everyone. It’s sad that this isn’t already the case.

One doesn’t need to be a child or have birthed a child to support a cause directly related to children. I’ve cared for and loved plenty of children (some of them who have been abused) to know that I don’t believe they should be abused!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

T&S and Stars. YAY!

Tegan and Sara. April 18th 2013. The Catalyst, Santa Cruz. (Thanks Mia)

A few months ago when Tegan and Sara announced that they’d be playing with Stars at the Catalyst I immediately bought tickets. Then finally, after waiting weeks and weeks, I finally made the drive down to Santa Cruz to see them. They were awesome!! I’m so happy I spent the money. This was my 3rd time seeing them and they were just as good as the other times. They played their new songs, which I’m not yet in love with, and they played a bunch of oldies, which I will forever be in love with. It was just an awesome show. I love them.

My name is not that uncommon, I have no idea why people don’t seem to be able to understand what I am saying when I say it or how to spell it once they hear me.

shelsie…ok this isn’t horrible but because I obviously pronounced a “ch” sound I feel like they should have probably thought of C.H. instead of S.H.

celsaea…I don’t even know what to do with that one!

Today’s weather and baby goats at Harley Farms reminded me that it’s Spring (break) and that I am incredibly happy about being super lazy for a week. I’m planning to watch every single Winona Ryder movie ever made ever. I’m very happy.

My last semester :)

I usually think to post about school when something tough or stressful is coming up. Well midterm season is here and I am stressed. But besides the next couple weeks, this semester is/will be really good! I technically have Mondays and Fridays off from school which is awesome. I’ve picked up an internship as well though which occupies my Mondays.

My obligations this semester are…

Sociological Quantitative Analysis- My least favorite of any of my sociology classes ever. It’s a statistics class with lots of math and greek letters. yuck. This is the one I’m currently most stressed about but I also feel like I’m being challenged which is good sometimes.

Research Internship Class- This class meets a couple times per month to discuss our internships and listen to guest speakers. Nothing intense and I don’t dread it…good news.

Women and Gender Studies: Gender, Politics, and Citizenship- This is not a sociology requriemnt but actually fulfils some stupid US government requirement that I some how didn’t complete before transferring into this program. Extremely boring class.

Introduction to Labor Studies- Again, not a sociology requirement. While getting ready to submit my transcripts for graduation I realized I would be 2 units short of the university’s requirement. I literally got to choose any class that would give me at least 2 units. It’s online though so it’s all good.

Internship- I’m working with a research team on a qualitative study looking at HIV and relationships. It’s downtown and kinda fancy. This week I’ve been screening participants over the phone. It’s scary but fun.

Sooooo, I’m only taking TWO sociology classes. That’s crazy. I can’t believe how close to being done I am…and how close I am to making just a few bucks an hour. Ahhh can’t wait ;) I’ve also been parking VERY far from school and hiking in to save 6 bucks a day. That’s a lot of money!! Side note: when I’m downtown on Mondays I usually pay $15+ for parking :( very sad about that. VERY.

Two things are obvious about the people who stole this sailboat from Sausalito and then got it stuck on the beach in Pacifica…

  1. They suck at sailing.

  2. They were planning to party hard.
